You Don't Need to Struggle Anymore
Preparation
I put in the extra time to help students succeed and it all begins once the student sends me their homework. Before we meet, I review assignments and work the problems myself. This gives me a clear understanding of what I need to teach. Many times, students struggle because they do not fully understand the concepts behind math problems, so I developed my own learning aids to breakdown the material for each student. We may only meet for 60-120 minutes, but I’ve likely spent several hours ahead of time creating lesson plans and material to simplify problems during our session.
Personalized Resources
I have designed my own teaching aids based off my students’ own curriculums that easily explain and demonstrate concepts. Using the student’s own homework and textbook, I create custom learning guides to supplement what students receive in class. Teaching the material in a different way often helps students understand the material, which is why it is crucial for me to receive homework in advance. Students are able to then use the learning aids I create to prepare themselves for exams, and I enjoy knowing that my students are able to continue applying what I’ve taught them when they’re tackling problems or studying on their own.
Staying Current
Since I left Morgan Stanley, I have been volunteering at my children’s schools. My current position is Co-Treasurer at my son’s high school, I’ve volunteered for an AP Statistics teacher to help in the classroom and as a tutor, and I am an active member of the PTSA. I also have many high school, college and graduate school statistics textbooks – and am always acquiring more resources based on students’ needs. Also, after decades of real-world experience and hundreds of hours tutoring, I am comfortable using TI-84, TI-NSpire, Excel and SPSS to name a few – and can help others become more proficient at using technology as well.
Real-World Experience
It’s one thing to teach material and it’s another to have applied it in real-world situations. This is what allows me to tutor not only middle school and high school students, but college and grad school students as well. While at the University of Michigan, as I was earning a master’s degree in statistics, I taught the introductory level statistics course. During my 16-year career as a data scientist at General Motors and then as a corporate finance VP at Morgan Stanley, I always loved helping colleagues understand statistics. Teaching was the best part of my day!
